I have been a housewife since 1994 and this really is upsetting. Last week, I got a call saying I owe Ambank which took over MBf. Since I remember paying them, I search for the letter of discharge and manage to find The Letter dated 1st April 2004. I then fax the letter over to the collection agency in charged. Although the info they gave me over the phone regarding the card number checks correctly as mention in the letter, they now tell me there are two different types of debts from same credit card. I am totally baffled and wandering why from 2004 until last week there wasn't any letter of claim or phone call.

Is it legal for them to do this?  How do I know the difference of what they are trying to claim and what I have settled on the same credit card? I hope you understand my explanation because I don't really know how to do it properly. Please help me. Thanks a million times.

@Shirley,

Please clarify it with the bank itself, as if you have the "release letter" letter on the credit card, bank has no right to tell you there is other type of debt which not cleared by your end. As release letter means you are released from their rights to collect any debt from them under the said account number.

If I am not mistaken. Please check with bank.

Thanks for the reply. Actually after getting another call, they say the Letter I got is from MBf cards but what they claiming is the line of credit from MBF finance. But since I do not know about the amount at that time and they only tell me now, am I liable since there was not any correspondence since 2004?

I received a call today after 12 years saying I owe MBf, which is taken over by Ambank, RM2k which has accumulated to RM70k and demanded me to pay or else bankruptcy action will be taken against me.

No statements or any sort of documentations was sent to me in the last 12 years until now.  Even this year when I confronted Ambank officers, they told me they will send my statements but to date nothing and suddenly I received a call saying pay or die. This is worse than Ah Long cases.

I am a single mother who do not have a proper job to fend my child.  I am in the midst of spending what little I earn for my son's medication and daily survival. How am I suppose to deal with such a threatening situation with Ambank (MBF Cards)?

Limitation Act 1953 protects you from becoming a bankrupt since the debt is more than 12 years old.

Just hang up the phone if they call again. Take care.

Gosh! Looks like a lot of this situations are from Ambank. I mean.. seems like they purposely 'lay low' and didn't contact debtors till the outstanding snowballed to more than RM30,000 and then BOOM... calls come in and demand for payment of ridiculous amount!

Other banks will take action fast.. so no excuse. BUT Ambank is totally screwed up!

While looking for solutions, I found this website.

Case started in 2014, when I received a call from debt collector agency act on behalf of Ambank saying that I owed them payment from MBF card usage back in 1997.

Check with CTOS that time confirmed they listed me in a special attention account section. No record appeared in CCRIS at that point.

Call up Ambank and being advised to made police report since I deny having any MBF card previously.

Police report then send to the officer in charge (recovery department) and then nothing happened. I follow up the case again after a month and being told that my case is still pending investigation. Time flies..

After two/three months later, I check again with CTOS and it appear that they have delete the record. No letter received from the bank. I THOUGHT case settle and they may send the letter to my old address.

Recently in February 2017, I plan to get a loan for education purposes. To my horror the record now have appear in CCRIS. Call up the bank again after 3 YEARS and again have to submit back the police report back to them and this time with different person in charge.. Now all back to square one. They say they need time to investigate the case (what have they done in the past 3 years??)

I also asked opinion from Bank Negara and being told to send complaint directly to them and STOP any correspondence with AMBANK.

I'm stuck..

Please help. I owe Ambank credit card at the age of 21 for RM2,000. Now they coming after me and requesting me to pay RM70,000. I told them I can't afford.  But I can pay the write off amount. Apparently these guys aren't from Ambank. They are from debt collection agency. Can I walk in and talk about the settlement?

The debt is already time barred. No need to response to them or make payment even for RM10. You take actions only if you receive letters from the bank lawyers.
