Buy-out option being rejected by employer

Recently, I have received a better offer and the potential employer is willing to exercise the buy-out option with my current company but when I've tender my resignation letter to my current employer, they reject the buy-out options by telling me that I need to serve the full notice period! Even though, my new employer is willing to pay all the cost involved for the buy-out exercise!

I'm really shock about this because in my employee handbook, it did have the clause about the in lieu salary payment option for the notice periods but at the end of the day my current employer told me it is subject to their approval. I'm really lost now as I'm not sure whether what is the right for an employee where their employer can treat them like a slave!

I really would like to find out what other alternative that I can have in order to sort this out. As I really don't want to miss the good opportunity and I have a start date contraint to meet as well.

Thank you.
