 | Can I inherit property in Malaysia when I am no longer Malaysian? (modified 0 times) | Eddy Canada | |
| I was born in Sarawak. However, eight years ago I became I Canadian citizen. My family still are Malaysian and lives in Sarawak. My mom wants to give me all of her property when she dies. Someone told me that I cannot get any of the property because I am no longer Malaysian. Is that true? That sounds really horrible. What would happen to all of my mom's property if she cannot give to me?
Please help me.

| I don't really know your answer but best to consult a lawyer. I have unofficially checked throught friends who have lawyer relatives and they said you can inherit.
In addition I googled and came across an article in singapore website, which says though foreigners cannot inherit landed properties in Singapore, they can inherit them but have to sell within a 10 year time frame. Normally Malaysia and Singapore have similar rules but I couldn't find anything in Malaysian website.
Please let me know if you ever find a more detail answer to your problem. | |

| Who says you can't inherit?! Of course you can! You can't inherit a Malay reserve land but certainly any other property. But when transferring to your name you may need to get certain approvals or pay certain fees. But yes, why not?! | |
