Anyone can let me know if just viewing porn on the net is crime in Malaysia? Just those free sites for instructional and curiosity purpose.

Thanks.

If you possess or sell pornography in Malaysia, it is illegal and subject to a fine of up to RM10,000. However, Malaysia does not censor or bar pornographic materials from the internet. Enforcement is weak and the government does not have the technical capacity to filter such internet traffic.

As mentioned by LoyerBrook, yes, normally a person will do it in privacy of home since Malaysia does not monitor users access to websites on the internet. However, if you commit a crime and your computer sized by enforcement, you could get prosecuted for possessing pornographic pictures too. Merely visiting such sites should not be an offence. Don't download and store hundreds of them in your PC as though you are a sex maniac.

I decided to test your theory of "weak enforcement" when I went to Malaysia by attempting to access over private WiFi, LAN and cellular data connection and every time it came up that such sites are blocked by the Malaysian government.

It is blocked, yes. My concern is; will the law enforcer come after those who try to access it, or the oneĀ  that is successful in accessing it via tracking their IP addresses?

In July 2018, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has set up a new investigation unit called the Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children (MICAC) which monitors internet traffic in Malaysia to pornographic websites and build a behavioral and analytical database of these individuals. Data they collect includes your IP address, location, URL of website, log time, time spent.

The police will show up at your home or office to pick you up for questioning if you visit pornographic frequently especially child porn. They are able to get your user details with the help of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

A lot of people believe that only watching pornographic is legal as they are not downloading and storing the pornographic videos or materials. But do you know that when you watch pornographic online, your browser is in fact 'downloading' such content to your mobile or PC. Normally, it has cache, depending on your software settings. Until you do a disk clean up, it remains in your device.

Bottom-line: don't do it.

Well you can just use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and go incognito, on incognito mode or privacy mode the browser does not store your history but your search history can still be seen on your house router or local servers.

With a VPN it can't be seen as your IP address and all are hidden and you are using a private network.

But the people who own the VPN can see what you are doing... Probably.
