Tor Messenger is a new instant messaging application developed based on the open-source instant messenger client,
Instantbird. It allows private conversations over instant messaging by authenticating and encrypting your messages.
Tor Messenger enables Off-the-Record (OTR) messaging by default and sends all of its traffic over
Tor network to allow untraceable communication with your contacts.
Tor Messenger transport protocols are written in a memory-safe language, JavaScript. It supports major transport networks including but not limited to:
- Google Talk
- Facebook Chat
- Yahoo!
- Twitter
- IRC
- Jabber
Integrated with an easy-to-use graphical user interface, the application has been localized into several natural languages.
Notes:
Tor Messenger is based on a client-server model thus your metadata, particularly the relationships between contacts, can be logged by the server. However, your route to the server will be hidden because you are communicating over Tor.
Your message will not be sent if the contact person does not have an OTR-enabled client. You can disable this option in the preferences to allow unencrypted communication but this is not recommended.
Installation Notes:
- All operating systems: Tor Messenger sets the profile folder for Firefox/Instantbird to the installation directory
- Mac OS X: Copy Tor Messenger from the disk image to your local disk before running it
- Linux: Extract the bundle and run: ./start-tor-messenger.desktop
