MPlayer is a stand-alone media player that requires no additional external codecs or installation. It supports a wide range of output drivers and works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, AAlib, DirectFB. However, you can use GGI, SDL, VESA (even without X11) and some low level card-specific drivers (for Matrox, 3Dfx and ATI) too.

MPlayer can decode subtitles in ASS or SSA subtitle format, using libass.
