FFmpeg is a very fast audio and video converter, decoder, encoder, transcoder and player. It can also grab streaming live audio and video source. FFmpeg enables you to convert between arbitrary sample rates and resize video on the fly with a high quality polyphase filter.

FFmpeg supports most audio and video formats.

FFmpeg tools can be used by end users to play, stream and transcode audio and video files. FFmpeg tools consists of the following:

• ffmpeg is a command line tool to convert multimedia files between formats
• ffserver is a multimedia streaming server for live broadcasts
• ffplay is a simple media player based on SDL and the FFmpeg libraries
• ffprobe is a simple multimedia stream analyzer

FFmpeg is being used by several software project for transcoding multimedia files. It consists of the following components for developers of applications:

• libavutil is a utility library to aid portable multimedia programming.
  
  
• libavcodec a utility library to provide a generic encoding or decoding framework and it contains all FFmpeg decoders and encoders for audio, video and subtitle streams and several bitstream filters.
  
  
• libavformat is a utility library to provide a generic framework for multiplexing and demultiplexing, muxing and demuxing audio, video and subtitle streams.
  
  
• libavdevice is a utility library to provide a generic framework for grabbing from and rendering to many common multimedia input and output devices and supports several input and output devices.
  
  
• libavfilter is a utility library to provide a generic audio and video filtering framework containing several filters, sources and sinks.
  
  
• libswscale is a utility library to perform image scaling and colorspace and pixelformat conversion routines.
  
  
• libswresample is a utility library to perform audio resampling, rematrixing and sample format conversion routines.
  
  
• libpostproc is a utility library to perform video postprocessing routines.

Installing FFmpeg on Windows for first time users:

• Download 'Static' Build Version for Windows (32-bit or 64-bit)
• Extract the .7z file using 7-Zip
• Go to the folder of the extracted build
• Double click on ff-prompt.bat
