WHY THE NEW GUIDELINES FOR LAW DEGREES FROM UNITED KINGDOM ?

The Legal Profession Qualifying Board has after careful study and discussions since 1993, set the new guidelines for the following reasons :

  • Changes in emphasis in legal studies in the United Kingdom
  • Insufficient duration in obtaining law degrees
  • Insufficient content of the law degrees
  • Relaxation of the minimum entry requirements
  • Midway transfer by candidates from one university to another
  • Relaxation of twinning arrangements
  • The increase in part-time, external and distance learning modes of study
  • Foundation courses being too loose resulting in being uncertain, vague and ambiguous

They have also taken into account of the following :

  • A special report commissioned by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board on law degrees in the United Kingdom
  • Visits and discussions the Qualifying Board had with the relevant authorities in the United Kingdom
  • The memorandum submitted by the Bar Council of Malaysia Special Committee on Legal Education Reform and Qualifications for Entry into the Legal Profession
  • The views of the local educational authorities and institutions.
WHY NEW GUIDELINES FOR AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND DEGREES ?

The new guidelines are introduced after careful study and discussions since 1994. In particular, they take into account of the following :

  • A special report commissioned by the Legal Profession Board on law degrees in Australia and New Zealand
  • Visits and discussions the Legal Profession Board had with the relevant authorities in Australia and New Zealand
  • Changes that have taken place in the area of legal education and training of lawyers in Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia and
  • The need to streamline all academic qualifications which are being used for purposes of admission to the Bar in Malaysia.

In fact Lembaga Kelayakan Profesion Undang-Undang, Malaysia is the Legal Profession Qualifying Board, Malaysia also known as Qualifying Board. Lembaga Kelayakan Profesion Undang-Undang is the Malay term of the Board.
